went for mitt romney. >> brian: when van jones said romney won you had a good night if you are rom romm. this sound bite is the strongest. we heard big oil accident tax breaks and busting the economy. not only did mitt romney attack this and address this, he grouped in and compared those alleged tax breaks with green energy investments with our money, listen. >> don't forget. you put 90 billion dollars worth of breaks in solar and wind to solyndra, and fis car and tesla and i friend of mine said you don't just pick winners and losers, you pick the losers, this is not the kind of policy to get america energy sescure. second topic you said you get a deduction for taking a plant over sea. i have been in business 25 years and i have no idea what you are talking about. maybe i need a new accountant but the idea for getting a break for shipping jobs over seas is not the case. we do have to bringg money from over seas back to. >> gretchen: that line happened to her. i got to hear that was to me, that is the mitt romney that a lot of people didn't think existed and wanting to see more of which

how we know he's secure with his debate. debate night he talked about romney care, the plan he passed in massachusetts and the next day he went to sea pack and got a hero's welcome. guys, the base is okay. >> the counties in this country with the highest percent of medicare recipient are republican counties. of the 47% he talks about, romney will get half of them. >> 47% don't know they're in that 47%. >> they don't identify themselves as victims. >> right. >> congressman, the problem is the margin republicans ran with seniors in '08, that margin is shrinking right now. that's really problematic for states like florida. >> bottom line is politics is perception. people when they hear a politician say something in private like that, you can't really walk it back. you can't walk it back a month later. there's another number though that came out today, we're talking 47%. and that is 7.8%. can we quickly all agree that any -- the new term is unemployment bertherism. this is not helping, is it? mitt romney, anybody denying saying the department labor infiltrated -- jack welch, put a fork in

reaction to last night and what it means? >> first of all, as a yankees fan, a nats fan, and a romney fan, it was a pretty good night. thank you for having fred and i. these are always fun to do. i am a huge fan of your jet engines, utc, particularly when they work. i am still here, so that is a great sign. the tw factors from last night, how much did mitt romney raise his image? we have seen a number of polls showing 2 to 3 points. mitt romney came across as somebody who was more genuine that they it -- than they had realized. this guy could step into the oval office and have no problems doing it. i am not sure that any other republican running in the primaries would have been able to pull that off last night. and i am being generous. [laughter] what i wonder is, we do our dialing between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. on the west coast, how do you do a national poll tax everybody is going to bed -- on the east coast, how do you do a national poll? everybody is going to bed. among undecideds -- look, the first decision they make is, do i want to vote for barack obama? he is the incumbent, the guy in

to mitt romney. and you watched mitt romney on -- on -- two nights ago talk about his fake ideas for america. what seemed surprising to me watching that debate is it is almost like mitt romney made up a new economic plan about an hour and a half before the debate and decided to talk about that instead of what he had been talking about for the last year and a half. >> i had never seen that mitt romney before. i don't think his staff had seen that mitt romney before. i don't think mitt romney knew what he was going to say until he said it. and it seemed to be working so he went with it. if you are just going to make stuff up and completely pander to the audience and say whatever you need to say to get elected, you going to do well in a dee bait. >> jamal: let's take on one big issue from that debate. i follow this stuff pretty closely, and i felt like mitt romney just refused to sit down on a fact which pretty much everybody snows true which is he wants to give a $5 trillion tax cut that will go to benefiting the wealthy and hurt the middle class, right? >>

tomorrow night of imcompetence. look, mitt romney, it's all on him. all on him. all president obama has to do is basically just be himself and not say anything, just repeat the same old thing. mitt romney has to convince the american people that going forward, he's a better alternative than the president. it's not going to be easy. so he's going to have to paint the president as an incompetent. this libya thing can be part of that, but certainly the economy, way more important to the folks than libya. but he can weave it. the second thing is that romney has got to kind of put aside his politician persona. i mean, he looks perfect, right? he looks like a president should look. but that's not working against him because people don't know who he is. he's got to find a way to say look, this is who i am. this is why i'm better. in very simple terms. it's daunting task for the governor. >> gretchen: yeah, it is. because if he comes across as sort of being in attack mode, which a lot of republicans want him to be, then the press might say, oh, wow. he really went too far. >> he can't care abou

on tax, healthcare and foreign policy. president obama and romney face off tomorrow night in denver. the stakes are especially high for romney when it comes to women voters. we'll have more on that at 7:15 when we go live to our washington, d.c. bureau. >>> the oakland as beat the texas rangers, 4-3. the as are heading back to the playoffs for first time in six years. [ cheers ] >> struck out all three batters at the top of the 9th. the celebration started. that means at the very least, the as clinched one of the two american league championships. the celebration moved into the clubhouse. the champagne, the beer was knowing. the players started dancing, too. coco crisp played a big role in the game, doubling in the go- ahead run and epscoreed the eventual run. you know, you wouldn't think that all of these rookies would be doing something like this but they have better mentality and they have this useful spark. >> yeah. the as have two games left, tonight and tomorrow afternoon. the now -- they are now one game behind texas. if they win both against the rangers the as will be the we

debate between barak obama and mitt romney is tomorrow night and the campaigns are doing whatever they can to get ready. actually i heard that the obama campaign is a little worried 'cause during his flight to nevada on sunday, the president apparently watched four hours of football instead of studying. [ laughter ] although it did mark the first time all year obama has seen something get passed. [ laughter ] >> steve: funny. >> brian: i did not hear that. is that the premise of that joke true? that he watched four hours of football? >> martha: you can also go back to the notion that it shouldn't take that much studying to get ready for this. >> steve: you should know. >> martha: they've been working on these issues, they've been campaigning on these issues across the country for months and months and months. does it really take that much studying to get ready for this? >> brian: is it wrong to disagree with martha? >> martha: absolutely. ask hemmer. >> brian: i think it's totally different when someone is coming at you and saying you're wrong about this and defending something yo

will no doubt see evidence of that bromance unfold thursday night. on the other hand, mitt romney's put paul ryan in the position where he has to defend statements like this. >> . >> so it feels like passionate romance and a marriage of convenience here between these two. is that the key thing that a vp has to be is basically champion for his principal? is that what people are looking for in the vp debate? >> unless the vp think they don't have much of a shot. in which case he has to think ahead to the next election cycle. it's clear to me what's what paul ryan is doing. so he should be. >> the interesting thing here, way back when they put ryan on the ticket, i thought i understood why. i thought the calculation was romney looked and said all summer long, i've been behind. this isn't budging. i need something dramatic here. i i'm going to run on the paul ryan plan. maybe it's translated as courageous and bold. they put ryan on the ticket and panicked and said wait a minute. we can't run of these ideas. they've tried to turn paul ryan into a generic -- i propose this medicare plan. we're not

of the debate in november. here's what chris christie had to say as he made the rounds. >> on wednesday night, mott is gonna be standing on the -- mitt romney is gonna be standing on the same side of the stage as president obama. the entire race of this presidency is gonna be changing. >> he's a good debater, mitt romney. >> let's go to jamie dupree via skype what. is being said -- skype. what is being said? >> reporter: well, usually, my guy is gonna be -- he's the champ and has been. mitt romney has had a lot more speniance in the last year or so -- experience in the last year or so. think about all of those debates for the gop nomination. romney always seemed to come ready to those debates with one or two-liner zingers. obvious you will, when there's only -- obviously when there's only two people here it will be only mitt romney and president obama. i would say one thing when it comes to expectations, we always talk up these debates and then they seem to be a borging -- boring muddle. i don't remember any good lines from considerry or mccain -- kerry or -- from kerry and mccain. >> this i
